How to change your garage door code
You might already know it, but in case you don’t your garage door has a secret! That secret is an internal code it uses to communicate with the motor unit to open the door for you. The main purpose? Security of course! The code for a typical garage door is a unique series of letters and/or numbers. These make sure that the signal sent out from the keypad is matched to make sure to open the correct garage door. A sort of lock to a key. This gives you comfort and security, because you know your belongings are safe, and the only person getting into your garage is you.
Time for a change?
You might be surprised to learn that you can change these codes. In fact, it’s much easier than you might expect. A change in your code can be needed for any number of reasons. It’s important to remember that it will not affect the operation of your garage door. That is, once you’re done with the change, everything will be working as normal.
Why change your code at all?
Well people change their code for a number of reasons. Let’s look at a few really quickly:
You’ve moved in to a new home
Many people are more comfortable once in a new home to make sure no-one else has access to their garage. If anything, it adds a little more privacy to your space. What’s more, it gives you a small personal touch to make your home a little more yours.
You were the victim of a break-in
Even though it is exceedingly rare, brake-ins through the garage are actually a preferred route of entry into your home. If it has happened to you or someone you know, changing the code to the garage door will ensure that a break-in does not happen again.
You’ve forgotten the code
We all have times when we forget passwords and codes. It’s nothing to be embarrassed about. But when you’re locked out of your own garage, it might be time to reset the code so you know what it is the next time you need to use your keypad.
There are many other reasons you might want to change your code too.
How to change your garage door code –
for the keypad
Step 1
Safety first. Grab yourself a ladder and place it underneath your garage door motor. Make sure it’s on a flat and stable surface. Climb up and get access to the unit.
Step 2
On the motor itself, locate a button that says reset or learn. Sometimes all the buttons and wires will be behind some kind of cover. The button is usually square and colored. Press it down until there’s a change in the light – some flash, some shut off. You’ll know it when you see it.
Step 3
Head over to your keypad and put in your new code, followed by the enter key. Some models will flash the lights to indicate that the new code was accepted. Congratulations, you’re done!
Step 4
Go ahead and test out your new code.
If it doesn’t work, fear not. On certain models, when you did step 2 you only erased the code that was stored in the unit. On these models, you’ll have to press and hold the learn button a second time. Go back to step 2 and follow through again, and it will be resolved.

Step 3
Now grab your remote and press the button you wish to use to access your garage. Once the setup is complete, the garage light will flash to indicate you’re done. Congratulations.
